CSG Energy Storage Technology and NIO Power Join Hands in VPP and Battery Swap

Southern Power Generation (Guangdong) Energy Storage Technology Co., Ltd. ("CSG Energy Storage Technology") and NIO Energy Investment (Hubei) Co., Ltd. ("NIO Power") entered into a framework cooperation agreement in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province. The witness is Liu Guogang, Chairman and Party Secretary of China Southern Power Grid Energy Storage Co., Ltd. ("CSG Energy Storage"), and William Li, founder, chairman and CEO of NIO, Wang Zhiqiang, chairman of CSG Energy Storage Technology, and Shen Fei, senior vice president of NIO, signed the agreement. Li Dinglin, General Manager and Deputy Party Secretary of CSG Energy Storage, Lu Wensheng, Deputy General Manager and Party Committee Member of CSG Energy Storage, Harry He, Head of NIO Power System Management, and Hu Weifeng, Head of NIO Power V2G attended the ceremony.

According to the agreement, based on the principle of "mutual benefits, complementary strengths and shared development", CSG Energy Storage Technology and NIO Power will fully apply their advantages and comprehensively cooperate in areas such as virtual power plants (VPP), battery exchange stations and utilization and recycling battery cascades to better aggregate and coordinate resources such as charging and exchange stations, energy storage stations and controllable loads on the VPP platform to provide load shifting, frequency regulation and electricity response services. grid, improving the efficiency and effectiveness of asset operations. The two parties will also jointly select suitable locations and install battery exchange stations, which will not only improve the availability of battery exchange service, but also promote the commercial adaptation of battery exchange stations as a distributed energy storage system.

As a new type of power coordination and control system, VPP is crucial for achieving flexible two-way control of the power system. Thanks to communication technologies, the Internet of Things and software algorithms, VPPs are able to aggregate, coordinate and optimize charging and switching devices, solar panels, energy storage systems and microgrids distributed in different locations to achieve optimal resource utilization.

As the population of new energy vehicles grows, policy guidelines have been established to strengthen NEV-grid integration and interaction through charging and swapping facilities. With car batteries acting as a controllable load or a mobile energy storage unit, a two-way vehicle-grid interaction mechanism can be established to accelerate the construction of a new energy system.

CSG Energy Storage was the first in China to build a megawatt-level lithium battery energy storage station, CSG Energy Storage currently manages nine electrochemical energy storage stations and has accumulated top experience in integrated solar charging stations, energy battery reuse and other vehicle interaction fields and networks. The installed capacity of its new-type energy storage system will increase by 2 million kilowatts, 3 million kilowatts and 5 million kilowatts during the 14th, 15th and 16th five-year plans.

NIO's Power Swap Station is China's first intelligent microgrid distributed battery swapping system that is able to participate in effective grid regulation through order prediction and real-time charging load assessment. In 2019, NIO already helped with load shifting in Shanghai by coordinating its Power Swap Stations and home chargers connected to the NIO Power Cloud. In addition, NIO has been involved in many pilot programs where it has worked with local power grids, power and energy companies to support the application of VPP in the electricity ancillary services market.

Thanks to technologies including quantum cryptography and 5G network sharding, NIO Power Swap stations are able to respond to VPP regulation and control instructions within seconds. In addition, NIO Power is now partnering with CSG Energy Storage to further improve the ability to regulate and manage flexible resources such as electric vehicles and participate more effectively in the electricity market through VPP.

"In recent years, CSG Energy Storage has accumulated rich experience and achieved fruitful results in the field of energy digitalization, green energy consumption and construction of new energy systems," said Dr. Fei Shen, senior vice president of NIO. "As the first EV brand in China to participate in power dispatch with VPP, NIO Power Swap Stations are able to shift load and regulate frequency, which has been proven in many regions in China. Furthermore, NIO will partner with CSG Energy Storage to take full advantage of our advantages in technology and operations and helped achieve the goals of carbon excellence and carbon neutrality."

Dong Chao, CEO of CSG Energy Storage Technology, said: "CSG Energy Storage is dedicated to building large-scale centralized energy storage power plants. As new energy vehicles develop, flexible and distributed energy storage is needed to improve service." capacity of the energy distribution network. This collaboration will advance battery swapping stations as distributed energy storage in the VPP area, providing flexible and intelligent load shifting, frequency regulation and demand response services to facilitate NEV and grid integration and interaction.”

So far, NIO has installed 2,375 Power Swap Stations and 21,603 public NIO Chargers in China. As of the end of February this year, 587 Power Swap stations and more than 27,000 chargers have participated in demand and supplementary shaving services in 14 provinces and cities in China with a total load shifting capacity of approximately 300,000 kilowatts.

In five provinces and autonomous regions in southern China, namely Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou and Hainan, NIO has installed 373 Power Swap stations and 3,944 public NIO chargers. Cooperation with China Southern Power Grid Energy Storage is expected to accelerate the development of the battery exchange network and deepen joint contributions to the new energy system. In the future, both will continue to explore standards for vehicle-to-grid integration and interaction so that more NEVs can participate and benefit from grid interaction.
