Toyota bZ4X electric vehicle to arrive in 2022

Toyota has dominated hybrids with the Prius and other vehicles for more than a decade, but the automaker has been reluctant to embrace electric vehicles.

That comes to an end in 2022 with the arrival of the Toyota bZ4X, a mid-size SUV.

The automaker on Friday released photos of the bZ4X and confirmed that the vehicle will hit U.S. dealerships in 2022.

Toyota said its internal tests based on Japanese regulatory specifications determined the vehicle would get 310 miles of range on a single charge.

Pricing has not been released, but the bZ4X is expected to compete with electric SUVs like the Tesla Model Y and the Chevrolet Bolt utility vehicle.

The company said it will introduce seven electric models under the bZ nameplate by 2025.

The bZ4X will be capable of charging up to 80% capacity in 30 minutes on a fast charger, Toyota said.

The vehicle will come with an optional rooftop solar panel system capable of generating enough electricity to drive the vehicle for more than 1,100 miles per year.

Toyota has sold partially electric vehicles like the plug-in Prius Prime, which runs on battery before gasoline kicks in. But this is the first pure EV from Toyota, meaning it does not take gas.z
